The daughter of Elmer Earl Shedd and Helen Jessica Caylor, Paula was less than a year old when she lost her mother. Helen died in August of 1935 of cirrhosis of the liver. Doctors speculated that it might have been caused by a previous case of malaria.
Paula's father, Elmer, then married Allie Lorene Denton. The family moved to Granite City, Madison County, Illinois in the 1940's, and he worked there as a carpenter in the construction industry.
Paula married Darrell Darwin Vaughn on 26 Jun 1952 in Charleston, South Carolina. He had enlisted in the United States Marine Corps in the fall of 1950 and was sent to Korea in January of 1953.
By the time their first son was born, Darrell was wounded in action on 07 Feb 1953. Paula and the baby lived with her mother-in-law in Granite City when Darrell was sent back to the United States for medical treatment of his eye wound. He received his discharge from the service on 31 May 1953.
The Vaughns were the parents of 7 children in all.
Paula lived until 1977. At the time of her death, she was 42 years, 5 months and 23 days old.
She was survived by her husband, Darrell; her children; and her step-mother.
In addition to her mother, Paula was preceded in death by her father.
Darrell later remarried. He died in 1993.
Children: 3 sons, 4 daughters.
