The family remained in Hamilton County and lived in Twig during the early years of their marriage. Lelon was a grain and livestock farmer there. He also did carpentry work. Fleta was a homemaker.
The Durhams later moved their family to Madison County, Illinois. He worked for the Shell Oil Company and spent 20 years as a custodian for the Roxana Community School District. After he retired from there, he worked for 10 more years as a custodian at the United Steelworkers of America Union Hall in Alton, Illinois.
Lelon belonged to the East Maple Street Chapel in Hartford, Madison County, Illinois for more than 50 years.
He died at Eldercare Nursing Home at the age of 84 years, 10 months and 29 days.
He was survived by his wife, Fleta; 3 daughters and 2 sons-in-law; 1 son and 1 daughter-in-law; 4 grandchildren; 3 step-grandchildren; and 9 great-grandchildren.
In addition to his mother and father, Lelon was preceded in death by 1 great-granddaughter, Amanda Jane Smith; and 1 sister, Mae Tate.
Visitation was held on 29 Jul 1997 at Gray Funeral Home in Wood River. Funeral services were conducted there at 11 a.m. the following morning. Fleta was buried next to her husband, Lelon, who passed away in 1997.
The family requested that memorials, if desired, be made to the church.
