Somervell served as M.P. for Crewe 1931-45, Solicitor General and Home Secretary. He also served in Sir Winston Churchill's War Cabinet. Educated at Harrow and Oxford, he became a Conservative MP for Crewe in the 1931 election and held it for the next fourteen years.
He was appointed Solicitor General in 1933, and was promoted to Attorney general in 1936, overseeing the Abdication of King Edward VIII. In 1945 he was briefly Home Secretary in Churchill's immediate post war government. In 1954 he became a Law Lord, retiring in 1960.
