Ruth, along with her twin brother, Ralph was born in Elizabeth, Indiana near Louisville, Kentucky. At the age of 2, her family moved to Marydel, Maryland. Her father, Perry and mother, Lillie, raised chickens. At about the age of 10, her family moved to Cowan, Indiana when a partner in the chicken business stole most of the family's money. They were in Cowan for a short time and then moved into Muncie. As Ruth reached high school age, her parents bought a farm near Yorktown, Indiana and Ruth attended Yorktown High School, graduating in 1936.

After high school, Ruth attended Ball State College, but before graduating married Robert Eldon Pingry in 1938. Ruth and Robert lived in Mitchell, Indiana, Griffith, Indiana, and Ithaca, New York, before settling in Champaign, Illinois, where Robert was a professor at the University of Illinois. Robert died in 1973.

In 1979, Ruth married John Wilbur Matthews. They spent the warm months in Champaign and at first alternated the cold months between Lakeland, Florida and Tucson, Arizona, before settling on Tucson for their winter home. In their later years, Ruth and John moved to St Charles, Missouri, close to Ruth's son Charles. John died in 2001. Ruth lived in St Charles and O'Fallon, Missouri before passing away in 2012.

Born November 9, 1917 in Elizabeth, Indiana the daughter of Perry A. and Lily Evelyn Combs Polson.
Ms. Matthews was formerly from Champaign, Illinois and was a member of First United Methodist Church of Champaign.
Survivors include ther children, David Pingry (Sheri), Charles Pingry (Joyce), John Pingry (Anne) and Janet Puzey (Nathan); ten grandchildren and fourteen great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her first husband, Robert Eldon Pingry and later by her second husband, John W. Matthews as well as siblings Victor Polson, Evelyn Wade, Osman Polson and Ralph Polson.

Memorial services with interment of cremains are being planned for a later date in Champaign, Illinois.
