Naturalist, Explorer. Born in Lymington, Hants County, England, he graduated from the Royal Military Academy and served as a artillery officer in the British Army during the Crimea War in 1854. After leaving the military, he went to Canada, joined the Palliser expeditionary party which engaged in surveying and studied the wild birds. From Canada, he went east exploring in China and Japan, where he was the first person to establish that animals in Hokkaido as an important border in the distribution of animal species in 1879. The Tsugaru Straits, which divides Hokkaido are internationally known in biology as the "Blakiston Line" in his honor. He spent the next part of his life in Japan as one of the major naturalists in that country until he moved to America in 1886.
