Alfred was the next-to-the last of the 15 children of David Tharp and Eleanor Tracy. He was born in Ohio, probably on his father's farm in Licking County. By age 14 he had moved with his family to Fulton County, Illinois.
In 1866 at age 20 he married Elizabeth Harless. They had at least seven children: William Harvey, Malinda Jane (Jennie), Lula E, Viola, Alfred Clinton, Jr., Phillip Earnest, and Carrie B.
Albert died at home at age 49.
