A native of Haywood County, Hardy was born on November 18, 1929. He was the son of the late Hardy R. and Mary Medford Caldwell. He was a graduate of N.C. State College. While at State, he was a member of Alpha Zeta, an honorary agriculture fraternity, served as the editor of the North Carolina Baptist Student Union Publication and was a member of the Alpha Gamma Rho fraternity where he held several offices, including Nobel Ruler.

While in college he joined the ROTC and immediately upon graduation was sent to Korea as a Second Lt. He spent two years in Korea and Japan and several years in the reserves. He left the reserves with the rank of Major.

After service, he worked with the Farmers Federation and the North Carolina Extension Service. In 1961, he went to work for the Gerber Baby Food Company in Asheville and retired there in 1991 as Produce Manager.

On December 15, 1956, he married Bobbie Lou Penland, daughter of J. Robert and Mattie Lou Penland of Hayesville N.C. Bobbie was employed by the Henderson County School System.

He was a member of the VFW, the Elks Club, and was a forty year member of the Hendersonville Kiwanis Club where he served as President. He also served as president of the North Carolina Apple Festival in 1959 and was active in the Western NC Crops Commission where he was awarded the Horticulture Person of the Year in 1991.

In 1979 he was appointed to the Henderson County School Board and became Chairman in 1981. He was on the North Carolina School Board Association Board of Directors for 4 years and was a representative for North Carolina to the National School Board Federal Network Committee. In 1990, he was recognized as the Outstanding Board Member from District Eight by the NCSBA Board of Directors. He served on the School Board until 1994 and served as the chairman for several years. In 2005, Hardy was inducted into the Henderson County Education Foundation Hall of Fame.

He was preceded in death by his parents and a sister, Guyline Caldwell Ross of Waynesville; and a brother, Palmer Belmont Caldwell of Waynesville.

In addition to his wife, he is survived by his son, Bo Caldwell and wife Jackie of Hendersonville; daughter Penny Hall and husband Jeff of Clemson, S.C.; a sister, Ethel Shetley and husband Ray of Waynesville; sister-in-law, Jo Ann Thompson and husband Charles of Woodstock, Ga.; and brother-in-law, Bud Penland and wife Becky of Murphy; four grandchildren, Justin Hall, Addie Hall, Bryce Caldwell and Ellie Caldwell and several nieces and nephews.

A service of remembrance will be held at 2 p.m. Friday at Fletcher United Methodist Church, where he was an active member for many years.

The family will receive friends at Thos. Shepherd and Son and Funeral Directors on Thursday evening from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. and also after the service on Friday at the Fletcher Fellowship Hall.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to either the Henderson County Education Foundation, Inc. P.O. Box 1267, 21 Upper Red Oak Trail, Hendersonville, NC 28793, or to a charity of choice.
