EDWIN DAVID REED

Edwin David Reed was born March 3, 1943, to Glen and Ollie Reed in Orofino. Unfortunately, he lost his mother when he was in the third grade and his father when he was in the fifth grade. He was then raised by his Aunt Mae and Uncle Aaron Reed, who became his mom and dad. He inherited two brothers, Aaron and Steve. He also had a half-sister, Vi, and a half-brother, Bob.

Ed grew up in Kamiah and graduated from high school in 1961. He attended college for one year at Idaho State University in Pocatello. In 1962 he, along with his good friend Dale Adams, joined the U.S. Marine Corps. He served in the Marine Corps for four years.

In June of 1965 Ed married Wilma Naftzger. Together they had two children, David and Dale. After finishing his service he went back to college at ISU. He completed his teaching and coaching degree in 1970. He began teaching and coaching at Rawlins, Wyo. In 1973, he became the head basketball coach at Little Snake River Valley School in Baggs, Wyo., where he taught and coached until he retired in 2005.

Ed then moved to Wray, Colo., where his son David lives. He coached four more years there but wanted to just watch his grandchildren play sports, so he officially retired in 2010. He followed the grandkids in both Wray and the Woodlands, Texas, where Dale lives.

Ed loved coaching and touched many young men's lives in the process. He also served his profession and his community with many years of service. He finished his coaching career with 482 wins and 203 losses. He was inducted into the Wyoming Coaches Association Hall of Fame and the National Coaches Association Hall of Fame.

Ed was preceded in death by his mother, Ollie; and father, Glen; his Uncle Aaron; his stepfather, Mel McPherson; and his half sister, Vi.

He is survived by his mother, Mae; wife, Wilma; brothers, Bob, Ron, Aaron and Steve; sister, LaVonne Smith; sons, David (Michelle) and Dale (Cristen); grandchildren, Christopher, Danielle (Tyler) Kline, Austin, Bailey and Bruce; multiple nieces and nephews; and his aunts, Helen See and Ella Dugger.

Vigil services were held Wednesday at the Spellman-Schmidt Funeral Home in Wray, Colo., with Bob Snyder officiating. Funeral Mass was celebrated Thursday at the St. Andrew's Catholic Church, with Father Jonathan Dellinger officiating. Inunrment was in the Grandview Cemetery in Wray, Colo. Memorials may be made to the Edwin D. Reed Scholarship fund for Little Snake River Valley High School and Wray High School. Spellman-Schmidt Funeral Home in Wray, Colo., was in charge of arrangements.
