Son of Tod Robinson, Sr. and Martha Ann Terry. Married Mary Judith Crittenden, daughter of Thomas Turpin Crittenden, Sr. and Mary Wilson Parker, on March 26, 1842 in Galveston, Texas. Tod was an attorney and moved his family to California before 1850. His brother-in-law, Alexander Parker Crittenden, also an attorney, moved with his family to California about the same time so it is assumed they went together. Tod eventually became Judge of the Sixth Judicial District. In 1853, Tod ran for the California Supreme Court as a Whig , loosing his bid.

Tod and Mary had at least eight children: Mary Howard, Tod G., Cornelius Preston, Kate C., T. Crittenden, Anne Wyatt, William Eli, and Howard Robinson.

Tod was originally buried in Masonic Cemetery, San Francisco and then moved to Laurel Hill, Cemetery, San Francisco. When Laurel Hill was closed in about 1939, his body was removed to Cypress Lawn Cemetery where it was buried in the "mound" behind the main building. Most bodies from Laurel Hill were buried there.
