He was born Jan Siemens Dijk in August 1855 in the country village of Thesinge, located in the center of the Dutch northeastern province Groningenn son of Siemen Hendriks Dijk (1820-1872) and Trientje Jans Bouwsema (1829-1916).

On November 4, 1880 he married in the village of Bedum, located in the western center of province Groningen the one year younger Fijlina van Dijken, who was born in Bedum.

From 1881 until 1897 they had in Thesinge nine children. In May 1882 their only daughter was born, Trientje Dijk. She was the only family member who didn't emigrate in 1904 to the USA. She married in 1906 Jan Heidema and died in 1914 in Thesinge.

On March 21, 1904 farmer Jan Dijk (48 years old) and his wife Fijlina (47) arrived with seven sons, Pieter (22, farmer), Jan (17, farmer), Arend (14, farmer), Willem (12), Lambertus (9), Hendrik (7) and Harm Pieter (6) on the S.S. Potsdam at Ellis Island, New York. Their last residence place in the Netherlands was Thesinge and their destination was Fijlina's brother P. van Dijken in Gallatin Valley, located in the southwestern part of Montana. On April 19, 1904 son Simen Dijk (19, farmer) arrived on the S.S. Noordam at the port of New York, Ellis Island. His last residence place in the Netherlands was also Thesinge and his destination was Manhattan, Gallatin County, Montana, where his parents were living.

In November 1906 Jan Dijk was a farmer too.

In March 1909 his wife Füliena died at the age of 52 years in Montana, Gallatin County, Manhattan.

In May 1910 John Dyk (55 years old, widower, farmer), his sons Peter (29, farm laborer on home farm), Arie (20, farm laborer on home farm), William (18, farm laborer on home farm), Lambert (15, farm laborer on home farm), Henry (14), and Harm P (12) were living in Heeb School District, Gallatin County, Montana. They were all born in the Netherlands and immigrated in 1904.

On January 5, 1914 John S. Dijk remarried at the age of 57 years in Chicago, Cook County, Illinois the one year older Ange Hoving, maidenname Anje Evenhuis (1854 Groningen, Netherlands - 1951 Illinois, USA), since 1888 widow of Harm de Vries in Groningen, and since 1907 widow of James Tiemens Hoving in Groningen too.

In April 1914 he was a farmer in Manhattan, Gallatin County, Montana, when he and his wife Anna were naturalized and became an American citizen.

In January 1920 John S Dijk (64, Holland, immigrated in 1904, no occupation) and his wife Anna (63, Holland, immigrated in 1908) were living at their own home in Manhattan, Gallatin County, Montana.

In August 1924 John Dyk died at the age of almost 69 years in Manhattan, Gallatin County, Montana.

In July 1951 his widow Anje (Evenhuis) died at the age of 96 years in Cicero, located immediately west of Chicago, Cook County, Illinois, probably at the home of her daughter Jennie (Jantje de Vries) and her husband Ebo Boerema, with whom both she was buried side by side in Stickney, Cook County, Illinois.
