Mrs. Adams taught freshman composition and/or sophomore literature survey courses at Ohio State University, Louisiana State University and the University of Tennessee. She received her Certificat d' Etudes, Fran?aises, Premier Degré from the Université de Grenoble in Grenoble, France in 1959 and was head of the French Department at the Webb School of Knoxville for seven years from 1959-1966. During this time period, she also worked on, and in 1966 received, her M.A. in French from the University of Tennessee. Mrs. Adams was admitted to the Cum Laude Society, Webb Chapter in 1965 and elected to the Phi Kappa Phi Honor Society, University of Tennessee Chapter in 1966. She also served as the first female president of the church council at Messiah Lutheran Church in Knoxville for several years in the early 1970s. Polly Adams was very proud of her entire family and loved them dearly.
Polly's beloved husband of 67 years, Dr. Percy G. Adams, predeceased her in 2008 and their eldest daughter, Andrea J. Adams-Hadley, predeceased them both in 2005. A memorial service for Mrs. Adams will be held in Knoxville, TN at the Messiah Lutheran Church at 6900 Kingston Pike at 2:00 p.m. on Sunday, November 11, 2012, followed by the placement of her ashes next to those of her husband in Messiah's columbarium. Music will precede the service and friends and family are invited to gather afterward in the church's fellowship hall. Mrs. Adams' favorite charities were Habitat for Humanity, Planned Parenthood and Knoxville Serenity Shelter for Women. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests donations to these or Messiah Lutheran Church.
