Esther Eva West was born on November 3, 1924 on a farm in Deuel County, South Dakota near Lake Cochrane to parents William and Martha (Nagele) Cornell where she was raised and attended country school. She was baptized and confirmed in the Lutheran faith. She moved to Oakland, California with her twin sister Edna and worked in the Richmond shipyard from 1944-1945. When she returned home she met her husband Earl.

On January 5, 1946 she married Earl West in Canby, MN. To this union they were blessed with five children: David, Larry, Diane, Lori and Nancy. In 1949 they purchased a farm in Lac Qui Parle County of rural Canby where they farmed together. After Earl's death in 1990, Esther moved into an apartment in Canby. In 2008 Esther moved into the assisted living apartments in Minneota and then later to the Minneota Manor where she lived until her death.

Esther was one of those truly unique people who met everyday with cheerful optimism. She enjoyed playing cards and games of all kinds, especially Chinese checkers. She loved watching the Twins, old time music and dancing. Foremost she loved her children and their families, along with her many relatives and friends.

She was a member of the Florida Lutheran Church until their merger with Our Saviour's Lutheran Church in Canby.

She is lovingly remembered by her four children: Larry (Joyce) West of Madison, MN, Diane (Jim) Malone of Currie, MN, Lori (Jack) Jerzak of Minneota, MN and Nancy (Dave) Trudgeon of Brooklyn Park, MN; nine grandchildren: Jackie (Gary) Sigdahl, Connie (Lea) Jerpseth, Lonnie (Paula) West, Hannah Malone (and special friend, Nathan) Leah (Chad) Bauer, Shalayna (Brian) Kloos, Cody Jerzak, Chelsea Trudgeon and Michael Trudgeon; eleven great-grandchildren: Riley, Trevor and Jessica Sigdahl, Brock and Mckenna Jerpseth, Mason, Morgan, Paige and Carter West, Emmett Bauer and Colten Kloos; one brother, Art Cornell of Albert Lea, MN and her twin sister, Edna Carson of Saint Paul Park, MN and numerous nieces, nephews and friends.

She is preceded in death by her parents, her husband Earl; son David; three brothers, Leonard, Carl and Edward Cornell; five sisters, Rose Claeys, Ella Cornell, Lena Heaton, Mary Nygaard and Ruth Savage.
