Iris Swearingen Griswold, 91, of Lufkin, daughter of the late Allie Belle (Coggins) and Thomas Lafayette Swearingen, was born February 22, 1921 and passed away November 17, 2012 in a Lufkin hospital. Iris was born in the Midway Community near Woodville. She began her working years in the W.T. Carter Company Store as a sales clerk, and later worked for Ronnie Smith Furniture Store in Corrigan. Iris was an active and faithful member of Barnum Baptist Church. She was an avid quilter and enjoyed this hobby with the ladies in her community. She lived in the Barnum Community many, many years before moving to Lufkin in 2006.
Survivors include her brother Bill Swearingen and a number of nieces and nephews. In addition to her parents, she is preceded in death by her husband Allen Griswold; and two sisters Anita Swearingen who died in infancy and Roberta Barnes.
Pallbearers will be her nephews.
Services will be held at 11:00 a.m. Tuesday, November 20, 2012 in the Barnum Baptist Church (east of Corrigan off Hwy 287) with Reverend Larry Trest officiating. Interment will follow in the Pine Grove Cemetery. Services have been placed in the trust of Gipson Funeral Home.
