Mary Ella Black was the first born of eight children of Rigdon Leroy and Mary Lavina Taylor Black, they were married in Spanish Fort, Montague County, Texas. Rigdon was previosuly married to Nancy Seabourn and before she died they had a daughter Margarette Lucinda "Lou" Black born 1880 in Wylie, Collin Co., Texas, Mary's older sister.

The children would pair up and Mary looked after her younger brother Oren. She was a very small woman, and the girls about 8 to 10 could wear her clothes to play Dress Up. She wore a size 3 and 1/2 shoe.

When she was expecting her first child, James Rigdon Coburn, she tried to gain up to 100 lbs.

Her children are James Rigdon, Earl, Oscar "Gus", John Henry "Happy", Ouida I, Pleasant Lonnie "Corky and Wilma Louise.
