"Blessed are the pure in heart, for they will see God." Matthew 5:8
Dorothy Lynn (Nelson) Bass, 77, passed from this earth on November 17, 2012 with her three children by her side. Dorothy was born on May 4, 1935 in Weston, Texas to Reta (Smith) and Carl Nelson.
Dorothy attended school in Celina where she was a majorette. She later received her GED in 1977 at the age of 42 demonstrating her determination and the value she placed on education.
In May 1952 Dorothy married Claudie Douglas Bass. They had five children who were the pride and joy of Dorothy's life. She devoted her life to raising her children and modeled for them kindness, compassion, generosity, and servitude.
Dorothy will be remembered for her compassion and steadfast faith as well as her devotion to her family. She loved spending time with her children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren. Dorothy truly had a servant's heart; her life was built around giving to others. She preferred to give rather than receive. Dorothy could be found working in the nursery at church, serving refreshments at Vacation Bible School, making crafts for those in nursing homes, organizing and cooking meals for the sick, and working in the local schools. Dorothy brought joy to everyone she came in contact with.
Dorothy was a member of First Baptist Church of Edgewood where she served as long as she was physically able. Then, she continued her "card ministry" providing blessings to so many by offering words of encouragement, congratulations, or condolences. Even through her own medical struggles, Dorothy reached out to others who were suffering. Her witness was her constant nurturing of others, her contagious smile, and zest for life. A woman of faith, Dorothy demonstrated God's love through her love for every person she met.
Dorothy is preceded in death by two sons: Claudie Douglas Bass, Jr. and Ronnie Lynn Bass, her parents Carl and Reta Nelson, her husband Claudie Douglas Bass, her brother Charles Nelson and sister Pat (Nelson) Phillips. She is survived by three children: Robert L. Bass of Fate, Texas, Becky Pruitt and husband Breck of Eastland, Texas, and Sandra Talbert and husband Tony of Waco, Texas, one sister, Rita "Babe" Phillips, and the joys of her life, her six grandsons: Jesse Bass, Jordan, Addison, and Grayson Ebarb, Tyler and Taylor Talbert, and two great-grandsons: Brandon and Travis Bass. She also leaves behind a granddaughter-in-law Camille Talbert, and many other relatives and friends.
The family wishes to thank all of those who have loved Dorothy throughout her life. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations can be made in Dorothy's name to First Baptist Church of Edgewood, Children's Ministry or American Kidney Fund. Beyond financial donations, Dorothy always lived by Matthew 25:40 "Whatever you did for one of the least of these brothers, you did for me." So share a loving act of kindness, make someone laugh, send a card, give a hug, or say "I love you" to your special friend in Dorothy's memory.
Visitation will be held Monday evening from 6:00-8:00 p.m. at Hiett's Lybrand Funeral Home at 702 E. Pine (Highway 80) in Edgewood.
