On February 29, 1946 the War Department officially confirmed the death of Ssgt. Sam Curtis Sjolander, son of Mr. and Mrs. Sam Y. Sjolander of Cedar Bayou, Texas. He was reported missing in action on May 19, 1944, after his plane was shot down over the Sea of Japan, south of Hong Kong. His body was never recovered.
