Known in the family as Reynolds, he was the youngest son of Elizabeth "Betsy" Bell (Principal subject of the infamous "Bell Witch of Tennessee" Legend) and Prof. Richard Rowell Ptolemy Powell. He served in Co. "F" 11th Tennessee Vol Inf, in the Confederate army at the Battle of Franklin and was Killed In Action, bayonetted by a yankee soldier on the porch of the Fountain Branch Carter home. His family recovered his body two days later and he is buried in the Batts Family Cemetery in Cedar Hill, TN between Springfield and Adams TN. His father who pre-deceased him is buried in this same cemetery in an unmarked grave. Possibly next to that of his son.Killed at the Battle of Franklin

Cpl. Reynolds Lefrick Powell, enlisted on May 21, 1861. August, 1862 promoted to 2nd Cpl. September 20, 1863, wounded at the Battle of Chickamauga, Georgia and was sent to a Confederate Hospital in Griffin, Georgia and later returned to his regiment.

His brothers, Pvt. John W. Powell died at Marietta, Georgia on July 25, 1863, and Pvt. Joseph R. Powell died at Home on sick furlough July 21, 1861.
