Amherst-Shirley M. Younglass (nee: Outland), 83 years of age, and a resident of Amherst, passed away Thursday, January 12, 2012 at Anchor Lodge Nursing Home in Lorain following a courageous nine year battle with cancer.
She was born March 21, 1928 in Akron, Ohio. Shirley was raised in Akron before coming to Amherst in 1947 where she had made her home for the last sixty-four years.
Shirley was employed at Nordson Corporation for six years. She was a member of St. Peter's United Church of Christ in Amherst where she was active in the Circle Six, the Altar Guild, Chi-Rho Couples Club and sang in the choir, Shirley volunteered at Amherst Hospital with the American Red Cross as a gray lady. In her younger years, Shirley enjoyed her time she spent as a leader for the Brownies thru Senior Girl Scouts, supporting the same girls for ten years. She was a member and past president of the Amherst Jaycetts. Shirley along with her late husband Richard were member of Good Sam Camping travel club. She was, also, a member of S.C.O.A. Her hobbies included crocheting, ceramics and crossword puzzles. Her greatest joy was spending time with her family. Survivors include her son and his wife Michael W. and Debra Youngless of South Amherst; her daughter and her husband Patricia and Ronald Thompson of Lorain with whom she made her home for the last two years; grandchildren Christopher Trelka, Scott Trelka and his wife Chelsea, Jonathan Trelka, Jennifer Novak and her husband Robert, Eric Youngless and his wife Crystal, Brett Thompson and his wife Melissa, Lauri Moore and her husband Mark; great grandchildren Alexander, Natalie, Morgan, Benjamin, Kendall and Tyler.
She was preceded in death by her husband of fifty-three years Richard William Youngless; her brother Robert Outland; her sister Joan Sisi; and by her parents John and Christine Outland (nee: Starner).
Friends may call Monday, January 16, 2012 from 4-8 p.m. at the Hempel Funeral Home; 373 Cleveland Ave., Amherst.
Funeral services will be held Tuesday, January 17, 2012 at 11:00 a.m. at St. Peter United Church of Christ; 582 Church Street, Amherst. The Rev. Mark Pemberton, pastor, will officiate. Burial will be in Crownhill Cemetery, Amherst.
The family suggests that memorial contributions be made to Chronic Disease Fund; 6900 Dallas Parkway, Suite 200, Plano, TX 75024 or St. Peter U.C.C. 582 Church St. Amherst.
