John William Crawford grew up on the Crawford Ranch, land that his father, James O. Crawford had homesteaded in the 1870's.
Not being the homesteading type, John sold the land he inherited from his father and moved his family to Millett, Texas, where he served as Postmaster and ran an ice cream parlor. The family later moved to Tornillo, Texas, where John worked at the cotton gin, tended the furnace at the high school, and operated a small farm. He later moved his family into town.
