STURGIS - Services for Mrs. Drusilla Reichert, 94, longtime Meade County Resident, will be 2 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 9,1974, at the First Presbyterian Church in Sturgis with the Rev. Charles White and the Rev. Wayne Griffith officiating.
Burial will be in Bear Butte Cemetery under direction of F.O. Jolley Funeral Home.
Mrs. Reichert died Thursday, Nov. 7,1974, in a Rapid City hospital. She was born Sept. 1,1880, near Milford, Neb., to John and Barbara Boshart. Her parents, who were Amish, had emigrated from Wellesley, Ontario, Canada. Their first home was a dugout, built into a hillside. When she was three years old, the family moved to 10 miles north of O'Neill, Neb.
She started school at the age of five, and spoke only Pennsylvania Dutch. Although she had no high school education, she took a teacher's examination for a certificate. She taught six different terms in rural schools, with from 9 to 30 students per school. Some of the terms were for just three months, Spring and Fall, because the buildings were too cold for classes in the winter. At the age of 16 she carried mail by horse and buggy over a 59-mile route.
Drusilla and George Reichert were married September 4,1905, in O'Neill, Neb. Four years later, George and his brother-in-law, Edward Boshart, homesteaded near Clough in Meade County, South Dakota. Drusilla and their two small children stayed with her family in Nebraska until the homestead house was built, and came to South Dakota in late March of 1910.
Throughout her life, Drusilla was active in her community. She was involved in ensuring her children had access to education.
A staunch conservative, she was very well read in current events and politics. She never missed voting in an election, and voted absentee in 1974, just days before her death.
Mrs. Reichert is survived by three sons, John, Sturgis; Paul, New Underwood, and Hugh, Hereford; three daughters, Mrs. Miles (Ruth) Hudson, Hereford; Mrs. O.R. (Edna) Basler, Rapid City, and Lois Reichert, Washington, D.C.; 15 grandchildren, 11 great-grandchildren, three sisters, Mrs, William (Ida) Phillips, Sturgis; Martha Boshart, New Underwood, and Mrs. Mabel Werde, O'Neill, Neb.
She was preceded in death by her husband in 1952, three brothers and one sister.
Funeral Note: Pallbearers for Mrs. Reichert were Michael and Hugh Hudson, Stephen Basler, Duane, Bruce, and Gene Reichert.
