An only son born to Presbyterian parents in Powhatan County, Virginia, he was soldier during the American Revolution and was in the battle of Guilford Courthouse [March 15, 1781]. In August 1783 he joined the Methodist Church, and his conviction was so strong he was called upon to preach. He settled in Jessamine County, Kentucky in 1790, and was principal of the English department at Bethel Academy. He preached throughout central Kentucky and founded several Methodist churches in Jessamine County. After 60 years of service in the ministry, he retired to Versailles, Kentucky, where he purchased a home for himself and his two unmarried daughters. On August 26, 1843, he wrote in his journal, "I am this day eighty-four years old. I stand to my engagement to be holy for the Lord."
