The son of German-born John George & Ann E. (Goekler) Spangenberg, in 1860 he was a carpenter's apprentice living in Carlisle, Cumberland County, Pennsylvania. He stood 5' 6" tall and had dark hair and gray eyes.

A Civil War veteran, he enlisted in Cumberland County June 6, 1861, and mustered into federal service at Washington DC July 27 as a private with Co. A, 7th Pennsylvania Reserves (36th Pennsylvania Infantry). On November 30, 1862, he transferred to the U.S. General Mounted Services and discharged - probably by surgeon's certificate - April 24, 1864. He did not mention his time with the General Mounted Services in the 1890 Veterans' Schedule.

After the war, he married Emma M. Wolf and fathered George B. (b. 05/26/69), William Keifer (b. 09/28/80), and Emma May (b. 06/26/82 - married a Jackson). He is in the 1860 census by his middle name.
