Marie Katherine (Schroeder) Schwanke was born to her loving parents Karl Frederick and Dora C. (Roenfeldt) Schroeder on Thursday April 13, 1911 at Leigh, Colfax County Nebraska. Marie attended rural Stanton County elementary school until the eighth grade and was raised in that area. Marie was united in marriage to Paul "August" Schwanke on Wednesday December 10, 1930 at Atlantic, Cass County Iowa. The couple were blessed with three sons and two daughters over their years of marriage. They first farmed in Nebraska until 1940, farmed at Walnut, Pottawattamie County Iowa until 1943, farmed at Harlan,Shelby County until 1947, and then they moved to a farm three miles west of Atlantic. This farm is where they spent most of their married life. The couple first rented then purchased this farm. Their youngest son still farms the farm to this day. One fifties summer morning my family traveled in our 1950 blue Ford to visit their Iowa farm. At that time we paid a toll to cross the Missouri River Bridge east of Blair, Washington County. A one lane bridge with high support beams. We spent the day on their farm, I recall playing with my cousins. The whole time I was on their farm the sun was moving from the west to the east. My directions were somehow turned around. I recall August and Marie being at my Uncle Otto's funeral service at Creston, Platte County Nebraska in 1960. In the early sixties we made another trip to their Atlantic's farm in my 1961 Chevy. I recall Uncle August driving us over to I-80 where we watched from an overpass the construction of the divided lanes below. Many millions of vehicles have now passed under that point, including myself numerous times. Sometime after Marie's husband August passed she was united in marriage to her brother-in-law Ed Houser who had also lost his wife Anna, this marriage was short-lived. I'm still researching the details. Sadly Marie passed on Tuesday evening September 19, 1995 at her home at the age of 84 years, 5 months, 6 days which does not include her last day, she lived a total of 30,840 days. Marie's funeral service was held at the Zion Lutheran Church on Friday September 22, 1995 at 1:30p with pastor Allen D. Hellwege officiating. Marie was interred in the Atlantic Cemetery in block 12 with a close GPS estimate of the center of this block being -41.399772, -94.982253. Roland Funeral Home was in charge of her arrangements. Marie's information was provided from researching many resources and my memory. This biography was created as an honor to Aunt Marie by Loren R. I believe all lives matter, even the lives of those who have passed. Many details are still missing from her life, if you have any more details I will be happy to edit the additional information into her biography. Please send your info to me at my email address [email protected]

Probable second husband: Edward J. Houser (1913 - 1987)
Probable sister: Anna M. Houser (1916 - 1973)
Probable sister: Helen D. Malasek (1916 - 1949)
Note: Anna and Helen were born 3 months, 20 days apart per grave headstones. I believe Helen's gravestone could have the wrong birth year inscribed. Per the 1940 Census Helen could have been born in 1917 or 1918.
