Nancy Brewer Freeman was born Dec. 23, 1837, at Elizabeth, Indiana and passed peacefully to rest, July 31, 1925, at the home of her daughter, Mrs. W. D. Stone of Walnut IL., with whom she has made her home for the past 25 years. Her age was 87 yrs., 7 months and 8 days. She was the daughter of Richard and Mary Brewer, pioneers of Walnut, and immigrated here with them when a little girl.
The hardships and privations were many. This venerable woman has witnessed many changes in this community. Walnut did not exist when she came here, their neighbors were Indians, but in a few years prairies gave way to beautiful farms and the log cabins to modern farms.
She was married Jan. 27, 1857, to Charles S. Freeman of Walnut, who preceeded her in death on Oct. 27, 1890. To this union 7 children were born, Ella E. Hollis of Hunter, Kansas; Albert R. of Mendota; Stephen J. and Charles R. of Los Angeles Calif.; Josephine Alshouse and Velora Stone of Walnut; and Nona Mae Landers, who passed away Feb. 5, 1913. Besides these, she leaves 25 grandchildren and 26 great grandchildren and 1 sister, Mrs. J. Wheeler of Princeton.
Mrs. Freeman was a charter member of the Christian Church and loved to attend services when health permitted. Her last years were full of suffering, but she bore it all with no complaints, those who were with her in her last illness cannot fail to be benefitted by her attitude towards suffering and death.
"She has left this plane of life
with its sorrow, pain and strife.
But her sweet spirit lingers near
to help and comfort those most dear."
Funeral services were held Sunday afternoon at the Christian Church, conducted by Rev. H. B. Wheaton, who gave a very fitting sermon. Beautiful hymns were sung by Mrs. J. A. Fisher and Mrs. W. P. Frederick.
She was tenderly laid to rest in Walnut Cemetery by six grandsons: Arden Landers, Harold Stone, Glen Alshouse, Gordon Stetson, Milo Hasbrook, and Jesse Fordham. The floral offerings were beautiful, showing esteem and respect for the departed.
