Robert Gath

Robert James "Bob" Gath, 84, of Riva and previously of Washington, D.C., died Dec. 21 at the Charlotte Hall Veterans Home in St. Mary's County after a brief illness. He had chronic obstructive pulmonary disease.

Born March 26, 1920, in Washington, Mr. Gath graduated from Eastern High School in 1939 and attended American University.

During World War II, from 1944 to 1946, he served on active duty in the Pacific Theater of Operations, including at Guam and Iwo Jima, with the 3rd Marines Explosive Ordnance Bomb Disposal Team. He also served in the Korean War.

In 1980 he retired from the Naval Reserve as a master chief, having served as an aviation ordnance man.

He retired in 1977 as a civilian employee from the Army's Harry Diamond Laboratory.

Mr. Gath was active in civic and community associations, and most recently was recognized for his longtime volunteer work as dockmaster for Sylvan Shores.

He was a member of American Legion Post 7, the Fleet Reserve Association, the Veterans of Foreign Wars, the Navy Explosive Ordnance Disposal Association and the Retired Enlisted Association. He enjoyed boating, aviation and NASCAR.

Surviving are three daughters, Donna Crowley of Bluemont, Va., Deborah Lindeberry of Galax, Va., and Dana McGee of Falls Church, Va.; and three grandchildren.

Visitation is from 10:30 a.m. to noon tomorrow at Kalas Funeral Home, 2973 Solomons Island Road, Edgewater, followed by services. Burial will be in Cedar Hill Cemetery in Suitland.

In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to American Legion Post 7, 1905 Crownsville Road, Annapolis, MD 21401; St. Mary's Hospice, P.O. Box 625, Leonardtown, MD 20650; or Charlotte Hall Veterans Home, 29449 Charlotte Hall Road, Charlotte Hall, MD 20622.
