He and his wife had two daughters and two sons.
Luke Hamilton was a Major in the United States Army between November 25, 1940 and November 27, 1946. He served in both the European and Pacific Theaters. One of his daughters says, "Luke G was Louisiana State University (LSU) long distance runner in the 1930s. In 1941 (WWII) he was caught behind enemy lines. He stayed up one night, escaped and ran the equivalent of a marathon without stopping to safety. He informed the allied troops where the enemy was stationed, and there was a decisive victory for the Allies that day.
Luke was then sent to Siapan where he was shot and wounded. He was awarded the Purple Heart in Hawaii while he was recuperating."
