Shirley Alexander, 64, of East Orange, N.J., and formerly of Stroudsburg passed away April 18, 1998 in the East Orange General Hospital. She was the wife of Abraham Alexander who preceded her in death in 1986.
Born on May 15, 1933 in Stroudsburg, she was the daughter of the late Earl and Helen (Sayles) Amhurst. She had lived in Stroudsburg and attended Stroudsburg schools, but lived in East Orange for the last thirty-four years. She was of Lanape descent, and was a member of her ancestral built A.M.E. Little Bethel Church of Stroudsburg later becoming a member of Life Changing Ministries based in Mary Esther Florida, a ministry co-founded by her son-in-law and daughter, Elders Bruce and Sharon McCree, who will be officiating at her "Going Home Services." She was also a former Daughter of the Rose of Sharon Temple #357.
Other survivors include daughters, Sonya and Tamara Andrews; twin brothers, Harold and Sydnore Amhurst of Schenectady, N.Y.; sisters, Dorothy Holland of Stroudsburg and Joan Chambers of Stroudsburg; a special niece, Vivian Amhurst of Moorestown, N.Y.; five grandchildren including grandsons, Tyrone McCree of Corona Hills, Calif. and Anthony McCree of Denver, Colo.; one great grandchild, Tiffany McCree; many nieces and nephews, grand nieces and grand nephews; and special friends, Hazel Gretchen and Mrs. Espy.
"Going Home Services" will be held on Friday at 10 a.m. in the Woody Funeral Home, Oakwood Ave., East Orange, N.J., followed by services at 1:30 p.m. in the William H. Clark Funeral Home, 1003 Main Street, Stroudsburg, with Rev. Bruce McCree officiating. Burial will be in the Stroudsburg Cemetery.
