John enlisted in the Confederate States Army on 6 July 1861 at Blountown, Alabama. He was mustered as a Private in Company G, 19th Alabama Infantry. He was captured on 19 September 1863 at Chicamauga, Georgia and received at Camp Douglas in Chicago, Illinois on 4 October 1863. He was discharged on 13 June 1865 when he took Oath of Amnesty.
