Jerry W. Hogan, 69, of Franklin County passed away at home on November 13, 2012, after a long battle with multiple health problems. A highly ethical man, these same problems led to his decision to retire from the City of Roanoke Fire Department, when he felt he could no longer perform his duties to his high standards, despite repeated protests from his C-Shift crew members. Jerry joined the Roanoke Fire Department June 10, 1964 and retired February 1, 1999 with the rank of Captain; He declined to pursue higher rank because of the great satisfaction he felt being a Captain and his desire to remain as "close to the action" as possible. Among several hobbies and past times, he particularly enjoyed fishing, golf, and hunting- activities he passed along to his only child and son. He also held a special place in his heart for his niece, Tiffany Lynn Ross, and his nephew, Gailon (Buck) Hogan, II and their spouses and children. Also surviving are many relations and friends too numerous to mention by name.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Philip and Carrie Hogan.
In lieu of flowers, the family suggests donations to the American Diabetes Association in Jerry's memory.
Funeral services will be held at Oakey's Vinton Chapel at noon on Friday, November 16, 2012, with Pastor David Jones officiating. Interment will follow in Quaker Baptist Church Cemetery, Bedford County. The family will receive friends on Thursday, November 15, 2012, from 6 to 8 p.m. at Oakey's Vinton Chapel, 540-982-2221.
