Marion E. Richey, 87, longtime Erie pharmacist, died Friday, May 30, 2003 at his home. He had been in failing health.
He was born July 12, 1915 at Altamont, Kan., the son of Earle J. and Wintress Oakleaf Richey. The family moved to Erie in 1922, when Earle J. Richey established the Richey Drug Store. He graduated from Erie High School in 1933 and attended Parsons Junior College. In 1938 he graduated from the University of Kansas School of Pharmacy.
For a brief time he was employed at a drug store in Coffeyville and from 1939 to 1944 he was employed at the Stewart Drug Store in Parsons.
In July of 1944 he became an officer in the United States Navy. He served in the Pacific Theatre and was discharged in February of 1946.
After the war he returned to Erie to join his father in the family drug store. After selling the store in the mid-1980s, he continued to be involved in the business, going to the store nearly every day. After 80 years the store continues to be operated as the Richey Drug Store.
He was a longtime booster for Erie activities. He served on the board of education from 1952 to 1969 and was a supporter of many school activities, especially sports events. He attended football and basketball games the past several seasons in his wheelchair.
He had served on the Erie Library Board, the Erie Pride Committee, the Erie Savings and Loan Association board and he helped organize the Mem Erie Historical Society. He helped organize class reunions for the class of 1933, the reunions for the "Dirty Thirties" classes and the all-school reunions.
He was a 57-year member of the Erie American Legion, a 50-year member of the Erie Masonic Lodge and the Order of the Eastern Star. He was also a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars, the Kansas Pharmacists Association and the Kansas Republican Party. He had served as a Republican precinct committeeman.
He was a member of the Grace Episcopal Church in Chanute and had served on the church vestry.
On Feb. 5, 1938 he married Carol L. Wiggans at Platte City, Mo. She preceded him in death on Oct. 16, 1980.
Survivors include: one son, Mike Richey of Fairfax, Va.; three daughters, Judith Johnson of Wichita, Mary Coleman of Tampa, Fla. and Kathy Walker of Lawrence; one brother, Ronald K. Richey of Birmingham, Ala.; and eight grandchildren and 13 great-grandchildren.
In addition to his parents and wife he was preceded in death by three brothers, Earle Junior Richey, Keith Richey and Leland Richey.
Funeral services will be 10 a.m. Monday at the Grace Episcopal Church in Chanute with Mother Jan Chubb officiating. Burial will be in East Hill Cemetery at Erie at about 11 a.m. Monday. Masonic rites and veteran honors will be given at the cemetery.
