DAVENPORT - Funeral services and Mass of Christian Burial for Melvin M. "Snooks" York, Sr., a resident of Davenport, will be 10 a.m. Wednesday, March 23, 2005, at St. Anthony Catholic Church, Davenport. Burial will be in Mt. Calvary Cemetery, Davenport. Visitation will be Tuesday from 4-8 p.m. at the Halligan-McCabe-DeVries Funeral Home. There will be a Christian Wake service offered at 6 p.m. Melvin "Snooks" died on Sunday, March 20, 2005, at Trinity Medical Center,Terrace Park, Bettendorf, following a brief final illness. Melvin Michael York was born July 8, 1928, in Davenport, a son of Melvin M. and Catherine "Edna" (Herber) York. He first married Dorothy Heskett. He then was united in marriage to Evelyn "Evy" Gavin on June 18, 1977, in Rock Island. Mr. York was a veteran of the United Staes Army and the United States Marine Corps, serving with the Marine during the Korean Conflict. He retired from the Rock Island Arsenal where he served many years as a Machinist. He had also worked on the Government Bridge and had been in charge of opening and closing the draw span. He had been a very active member of the Loyal Order of the Moose. Melvin enjoyed spending time with is family. He especially loved the time spent at his camp with family and friends. His two miniature dachshunds were his "little buddies" and he was proud of his canine friends. Memorials can be made to Trinity Home Health Care c/o Terrace Park, Bettendorf Survivors include his wife, Evy; and children, David Michael York and Jana, Davenport; Catherine "Sis" and Carlo Nicoletto, Davenport; and Melvin M. "Mike" York, Jr., Darien, Ill.; six grandchildren, David, Trina, Heather, Michael, D.J. and Brian; and 15 great-grandchildren; sisters, Darlene Finch, Shirley Ballanger, Vivian Washam, Connie Welk, Judy Fleetwood, Marcia York, Pam Jones, and Jackie Caskey; and brothers, Bob York, Gary York, Jerry York, Paul York, Pat York; and half brothers, Jack Promisson, and Danny Burton. In addition to his parents, Melvin and Edna York, a sister, Donna Walton, and a brother, John York, preceded him in death.
