Oct. 14, 1923 - April 11, 2012

South Bend Tribune, November 14, 2012

MISHAWAKA - George peacefully died at his home in Mishawaka on April 11, 2012; he was 88 years old.
George was born October 14, 1923, in Michigan City, Indiana, to James & Maria Nome. He was the oldest of five children, only three surviving childhood. The children were sent to live in the Mishawaka Children's Home when their mother died in 1929. George graduated from Mishawaka High School in 1943, after four successful years as quarterback with a group of men he remained close to through his life. He then enlisted in the Armed Forces, serving his country as an 11th Airborne paratrooper. Alongside others in Battery "D," he helped liberate the Philippines from the Japanese in battles of Leyte and Luzon ('44-'45). He also served in Japan during peacetime. After serving his country from '43-'46, George worked at Ball Band, was in sales for Gates Chevrolet, worked in the banking industry, ran a strong campaign against 4-term-mayor "Maggie" Prickett in '75, opened his own mobile home sales, and eventually went back into car sales for Jordan Ford, from which he retired. After his close run as a mayoral candidate, George felt strongly about serving his community and involved himself in politics again in retirement, serving the county as (D) councilman for many years. He was also a longtime member and president (1967-68) of the Mishawaka Lions Club. George played competitive baseball and softball for many years after the war. He enjoyed bowling, fishing & pontooning, and served as a member of the Mishawaka High School "chain gang" for many years. He was pivotal in helping start the MHS alumni gatherings. He was a humble man who lived modestly and quietly, helping those less fortunate. Surviving are a daughter, Suzanne, and children; a sister, Mary Miller; niece, Chris Calhoun (Jim) of Indiana, Pennsylvania; sister-in-law, Helen Sparks; nephews, Russell (Peggy), Rick and John Sparks; niece, Kathy (Ralph) Fipelli; several great-nieces and nephews, Marilyn Leuthold, Mark and Becky Miller and their families. Preceding in death were George's parents; his brother, Albert A. Nome (KIA, Belgium, WW II); in-laws, Cecil & Opal Sparks; brothers-in-law, Fred Sparks & Lee Miller; nephews, Douglas & Steven Miller; close as family, Hershel Tritipo and Hazel Bolen, Mr. & Mrs. Jesse Miller, Laverne Tritipo, Jim and Margie Miller.

In lieu of a funeral, George requested cremation.
