I have done extensive research on William Miller Bledsoe Jr family of Fentress County TN while writing the history of my Joseph Reeder family who lived in Boatland of the same county. William's son, Confederate Maj Willis Scott Bledsoe, and his brothers played a roll in the killing of Joseph Reeder a Union soldier 5th KY Cavalry who was home at Boatland when he was will killed in 1863. I am a descendant from both of these families.
Fentress County was primarily a Union area during the war. Maj Bledsoe, in conjunction with notorious killer Champ Ferguson, raided and killed many of the Union supporting citizens of the county.
When the war was over, most of Williams family, including his wife Elizabeth, left Fentress County and moved to Texas arriving there before 1870. I had expected to find William buried in Fentress Co before 1870 because he was not part of the Texas move. My last record of him is in the 1860 Fentress census. He and wife are living with their son, Elijah Bates Bledsoe, a farmer near Jamestown, the only son who was not off to war. I find no evidence the family went to TX via Louisville KY. I find only two Bledsoes in this cemetery that are of his family line. 1. Granville S Bledsoe a distant cousin and 2. Robert Baylor Bledsoe 1864-1943 Memo #96732239. I will offer my findings on Robert Baylor on his memorial. I am yet convinced this is the grave of William Miller Bledsoe Jr.
I have other issues with this memorial in addition to the date of death vs. burial. William Miller Bledsoe, Jr 1792 – 1867 was a successful merchant in Jamestown TN (Fentress County) who sent 5 of his seven sons to law school. During the Civil War the citizens of Fentress County were very Union oriented. Three of his sons led by Major Willis Scott Bledsoe joined the Confederate Army. Major Bledsoe and Major's brothers operated in conjunction with the notorious Champ Ferguson. They raided and killed many Fentress County citizens who supported the Union cause. One of those was my 2G grandfather Joseph Reeder of the Union 5th Ky Calvary who was killed while at his home in Boatland in Fentress County in 1863. I have done extensive research of the William Bledsoe Jr family while writing the history of Joseph Reeder. I am a descendent of both the Reeder and Bledsoe families. Bledsoe (1834 – 1856) are distant cousins of William. I believe Robert Baylor Bledsoe (1864 – 1943) is a relative and I will explain those details on his memorial.
