He was a graduate of the U.S. Naval Academy, Annapolis, becoming a lieutenant 1 July, 1849. During Commadore Perry's expedition, Bent conducted a series of surveys on the coast of Japan that opened the largely unknown ports to the world. He was recognized for the courage with which he conducted himself. "When we consider that this, one of the greatest bays in the world, had hitherto not been surveyed, the interest and value of [his] endeavors will be better understood."

On 5 November 1857, he married Ann Eliza Tyler, daughter of Robert Tyler and Mary Lawrence Chambers Tyler in Louisville, KY. He returned to Missouri at the outbreak of the Civil War. There, he was a member of the Board of Freeholders who formed the city charter of St. Louis. He held many positions of trust in St. Louis, then assumed the management of the Tyler Estate.
