Virginius Bate To Be Buried This Afternoon
Forebears Pioneers in Jefferson County
The funeral for Virginius Alexander Bate, 87, member of a pioneer Jefferson County family, will be at 3 p.m. today at Pearson Funeral Home. Burial will be in Cave Hill Cemetery.
Bate died at 10 p.m. Wednesday at his home on Bate Lane. The road was named for the family, which once owned approximately 4,000 acres of land in and near Louisville and donated the land for a Methodist church on Fourth Street.
Built Home in 1800---
The Bate family lineage traces back to Alfred the Great, King of England. The family settled in America in 1760. In 1800, James Smalley Bate built Berry Hill, a Georgian dwelling at Glenview. The house is now the Baylor O. Hickman home.
Virginius Bate was a retired agent for Commonwealth Life Insurance Company here. His wife, Mrs. Betty Johnson Bate, died in February.
Survivors are a son, Evans J. Bate; a daughter, Mrs. Robert M. Smith, Charleston, S.C., and a brother, Dr. R. Alexander Bate.

The marriage of Miss Betty Rives Johnson of Henderson, and Mr. Virginius A. Bate, of this city, will take place Tuesday evening at 8:30 at the First Presbyterian church of Henderson.
The bride's only attendant will be her cousin, Miss Bessie Allen, of Henderson, who will be the maid of honor.
Mr. Webster Robertson, of Louisville, will be the best man, and the ushers will be Mr. Evans Johnson, of Henderson, the bride's brother; Mr. Burrell Farnsley, Mr. Norvin Green and Mr. Will Jacob, all of Louisville.
The wedding will be followed by a reception to be given by Dr. and Mrs. Campbell H. Johnson, the brother and sister of the bride, with whom she makes her home.
After a short wedding trip, the couple will make their home at 1541 Second Street.
Among the Louisvillians who expect to attend the wedding are Mrs. S. E. Bate and Dr. R. A. Bate, the groom's mother and brother; Miss Laura Jacob and Mr. Will Marstrand. Mrs. W. H. Clark, of Chicago, the groom's sister, will also attend.
