Clara was the oldest of the eight children born to Gottlieb and Bertha (Lau) Bartels. She grew up and remained a faithful member of Zion Lutheran Church south of Tobias in Saline County, being baptized there in 1895, confirmed in 1908, and married to Martin Bruegemann there on August 30, 1914. They had four children: Vernan, Arlene, Dolores, and Melvin.
