FAIRBURY - Harold P. Bauer, 89, Fairbury, died Saturday, Oct. 4, 2003, at his home in Fairbury. He was born March 18, 1914, in Gladstone to Oscar J. and Minnie (Onnen) Bauer. He was a farmer.

Survivors: wife, Lela; sons, Alan Bauer and wife Cindy of Sterling, Ill., Brian Bauer and wife Sandy of Fairbury; grandchildren, Tyler, Sarah and Marc Bauer of Sterling, Ill., Kyle and Blake Bauer of Fairbury; brothers, Eldon Bauer and wife Martha of Fairbury, Oscar Bauer and wife Luella of Fairbury, Martin Bauer and wife Lois of Lincoln; nephews and nieces. He was preceded in death by his parents; brother-in-law, Henry Bangert; sister-in-law, Loretta Drees and husband Walter.

Funeral services: 10:30 a.m. Saturday, Oct. 11, Grace Lutheran Church, Fairbury, Pastor Charles Schmidt officiating. Burial: Grace Lutheran Cemetery, Gladstone. Memorial: Grace Lutheran Cemetery and radio funds. Gerdes-Meyer Funeral Home, Fairbury.

Harold P. Bauer, second eldest son of Oscar J. and Minnie nee Onnen Bauer, was born on March 18, 1914 at the family home near Gladstone.  He died Oct. 4, 2003 at his home at the age of 89 years 6 months and 16 days.  He was baptized on April 5, 1914 at Trinity Lutheran Church by the Rev. M. Zagel and confirmed there on May 27, 1928 by the Rev. F. Bangert.
 
He received his elementary education at Trinity Lutheran School.  He attended Gilead Public School for the 9th grade and then Fairbury High School, graduating with the Class of 1932.
 
He married Lela Bartels on Nov. 25, 1962 at Zion Lutheran Church near Tobias.  This union was blessed with two sons.
 
After his brother Elden's return from military service during World War II, they established a farming and livestock partnership known as Bauer Bros.  This continued until 1994, at which time he incorporated with his son, Brian.
 
Harold had a long and successful career in the swine industry, raising Poland China breeding stock and selling to many areas of the United States.  He also served as swine judge at neighboring state fairs and swine shows. He served a term on the board of the National Poland China Record Association.  In 1988 he was honored as a 50-year swine exhibitor at the Nebraska state Fair.  In 1994 he was inducted into the Distinguished Service Hall of Fame by the Poland China Swine Record Association for his years of service to the industry. In 2001 he was honored for many years of participation, loyalty and support of the Open Class Swine Show by the Nebraska State Fair.
 
He served his church as an elder both at Trinity and Grace Lutheran Church of Fairbury, which the family joined in 1965.  He served as chairman of the chairman of the committee for renovation of the former Trinity Lutheran Church Cemetery, which then became Grace Lutheran Cemetery.
 
He was a member of the Farmers Union and was a project leader for the Happyrock 4-H Club.
 
Preceding him in death were his parents, brother-in-law Henry Bangert, and sister-in-law Loretta Drees and husband Walter.
 
He is survived by his wife Lela; sons and daughters-in-law, Alan and Cindy of Sterling, Ill. and Brian and Sandy of Fairbury; five grandchildren, Tyler, Sarah and Marc Bauer of Sterling and Kyle and Blake Bauer of Fairbury; sister, Irene Bangert of Harbine; brothers and sisters-in-law Elden and Martha and Oscar and Luella of Fairbury, and Martin and Lois of Lincoln; also nephews and nieces.
 
Services will be held at Grace Lutheran Church in Fairbury on Saturday, Oct. 11, 2003 at 10:30 a.m. Pastor Charles Schmidt will officiate. Organist will be Glenda Junker.   Congregational hymns will be "Jesus Lives,"  "The Victory's Won," "I Know That My Redeemer Lives" and "Lord Take My Hand and Lead Me."
 
Casket bearers will be Neal Onnen, Jim Nigh, Galen Drees, Kevin Wittler, Kent Bauer and Dennis Kapke.
 
Interment will be in Grace Lutheran Cemetery at Gladstone.
 
Memorials have been established to Grace Lutheran Cemetery and Radio Funds.
 
Gerdes-Meyer Funeral Home of Fairbury was in charge of arrangements.
