U.S. Senator. Moving to Cloverport, Kentucky, in 1816, he engaged in mercantile pursuits, was justice of the peace, (1823-33), studied law, was admitted to the bar and practiced law in the Breckenridge County, (1833-43). Relocating to Texas, in 1843, he continued the practice of law and engaged in agricultural pursuits. He was a member of the Texas State House of Representatives, (1851-52) a member of the Texas State Senate, (1855-56) and served as the 11th Lieutenant Governor of Texas, (1869-70). Upon the readmission of Texas to representation, he was elected as a Republican to the United States Senate, serving (1870-75). After his Senate term, he retired to his farm until his death at age 82.
