James is the son of Thomas Alvin Copeland and Mary Ann Mitchell.
He married Frances Jane COPELAND, daughter of John and Sarah Copeland, December 1, 1870.

In 1880 they lived in Decatur, Kansas returning to Allegheny, PA (family farming next to 2 other Copeland households- James' uncle John Hayward Copeland <1820-1895>& wife Sarah Ann Clark and their son James Clark Copeland <1852-1913> & Martha.)

The 1900 census indicates they had ten children, 4 living.

He served in Civil War Army, Company E, 8th Penna. Heavy Artillery. Rank Corporal, discharged June 13, 1865.
PA Veteran's burial record indicates a GAR (Grand Army of Republic) marker.
