Eugene W. Dickes, Sr.

Eugene W. Dickes, Sr. of Longmont, went to be with the Lord on July 6, 2010 at Sierra Vista Health Care Center in Loveland. Eugene suffered from Alzheimer's disease. He was 83.

Eugene was born on August 1, 1926 in Osmond, NE to Mabel and Frank Dickes. He graduated from Osmond High School. At the age of 18, he served in World War II in the U.S. Army with Company F, 88th Calvary Reconnaissance Squadron in England, France, Belgium, Germany and Czechoslovakia. He was honorably discharged in 1946 with the rank of Lieutenant.

He met his wife of 63 years, Wilma L. Greer, in Harlan, IA. They married on April 30, 1947. Eugene began a career in sales taking him to Nebraska, Iowa , and Colorado.

He and Wilma enjoyed being with their family, boating, camping, and playing cards with friends and family. After he retired, they enjoyed spending their summers at the 7 Pines Campground in the Thompson Canyon and traveling the United States.

Eugene truly was a blessing to others because of his kind heart and generous spirit. He always took the time to put others first. He never knew a stranger.

Preceding him in death are his parents, four brothers, one daughter and two grandchildren.

Eugene is survived by his wife, Wilma L. Dickes of Longmont; brother Raymond Dickes of Mason City, IA; four children – Judy A. Schaefer, husband Richard, of Longmont, Joan A. Lamb, husband Tom, of DuPont, WA., Eugene W. Dickes, Jr., wife Lori, of Lyons and Jodi A. Greer, husband Dave of Ft. Collins; ten grandchildren—Todd Schaefer (Amy), Tyler Schaefer (Erica), Stephanie (Schaefer) Hill (Kevin), Jamie Lamb, Lindsay (Lamb) Phillips (Ben), Sean Lamb (Kristi), Jesse Dickes (Hannah), Jacob Dickes (Colleen), Adam Greer and Chloe Greer; eight great grandchildren; and two great grandchildren on the way.

Visitation will be 2:00 to 4:00pm Thursday, July 8, 2010 at the Ahlberg Funeral Chapel, with family present to greet friends. A memorial service will be held at 10:30am Friday, July 9, at Ahlberg Funeral Chapel. Military honors by the United States Army Honor Guard and American Legion Post 32. A reception honoring Eugene will be held at Ahlberg Funeral Chapel directly following the memorial service. Graveside service will be held at Fort Logan National Cemetery in Denver following the reception.
