He was born November 19, 1943, at Baileyville to Leo O. and Julie Agnes Kelly Henry. He was a graduate of Seneca High School. Dr. Henry was a veteran serving in the U. S. Army, and was stationed in Germany. He received his B.A. in Theater and English in 1967, an M.S. as a Reading Specialist in 1973 at Washburn University and his Doctorate in 1978 from the University of Kansas in Special Education and Learning Disabilities. Dr. Henry taught English, Journalism, Speech and Theater in the Topeka Public Schools for several years. In addition, he taught speech and theater at St. John’s Seminary, in Kansas City, Missouri from 1974-1975. During the summer of 1975 and 1976, Dr. Henry was a visiting professor at Creighton University Department of Special Education. That same year he came to Pittsburg State University, where he served as Director of Special Education, Department of Special Services and Leadership Studies, in the College of Education. He also taught a semester at the Udayana University in Bali, Indonesia. From 1982 until 2002 he served as Director of Services for PSU students with learning disabilities and attention deficit disorders. He retired in December 2003.
Dr. Henry received numerous awards and honors including the Outstanding Faculty Award from PSU Student Government Association in 1987, and the Kansas Master Teacher Award in 1987. He was published extensively in his field. Dr. Henry held certifications in Secondary Education, Reading Specialist, and Learning Disabilities.
He was a member of several professional organizations at the national, state, and local levels, including the Association for Children with Learning Disabilities, Council for Exceptional Children, Council for Learning Disabilities, National and Division for Learning Disabilities, Council for Administrators of Special Education, National Teacher Education Division, National American Reading Forum, National College Reading Association and the Kansas College and University Trainers of Teachers of the Learning Disabled.
Dr. Henry was a member of Our Lady of Lourdes Catholic Church.
Nick was one of eleven children. His siblings are Rita Fienhage, Eileen Huls, Betty Kramer, Mary Chelemedos, James, Norma Heiman, Arlen, Cecil, Damian, and Sonja.
Following the funeral, Dr. Henry was cremated.
