Dorothy Brooke was the founder of The Brooke..Animal Hospital.After the 1st World War many horses were taken from England and used by the British Army in Egypt. After the war these animals were sold by the Military to many poor people who had little knowledge of how to care for a working horse properly. When Dorothy Brooke saw the poor conditions of these poor horses. This very intelligent and bold Lady used her skill and considerable influence to raise money,via donations from the British public.To buy back the horses and they could end their days in peaceful silence and not toiling heavy loads on the Streets of Cairo.
Dorothy Gibson-Craig was born in Melrose, Scotland into a Scottish aristocratic Family.Her childhood being spent in Scotland,Wiltshire and Hampshire.
Always interested in the welfare of animals especially horses and donkeys. Dorothy became a very accomplished horsewoman and had a deep affinity with horses.
The Brooke organisation is still in operation today and the original Brooke Animal Hospital in Cairo, is still in use. Members of Dorothy's family are still connected with The Brooke and the welfare of horses and donkeys in poor countries are now being treated by this organisation founded by Dorothy Brooke.
