John was born in Tippecanoe County, IN, one of nine children of Abel B. Jennings and Minerva Graves, both natives of OH. John was a Civil War Veteran enlisting 1 Dec 1861 in Company H 40th IND INF serving in the Army of the Cumberland. He was honorably discharged 20 Nov 1864 after being severely wounded at the Battle of Kenesaw Mountain. He returned to Tippecanoe County where on 6 April 1866 he married Hester Ann Shigley. They had the following children: Mary Alice, Wiley S., Elizabeth, Belle, George W., James R., Asa, and Dora Arthur. There were other children who died in infancy.

John was a farmer, a Republican, a member of the John A. Logan Post of the GAR and the Odd Fellows Lodge. He was a member of the Methodist Episcopal Church.
