John F. "Jack" Sherman, age 96, former resident of Louise Dr., Shelby died Wednesday, May 9, 2007 in Crystal Care Center in Mansfield.

Born April 24, 1911 in Taylorville, Illinois to Jay F. and Anna B. (Doutaz) Sherman he had been a Shelby resident since 1929.

A 1929 graduate of Galion High School, Mr. Sherman graduated with honors from Ashland College with a degree in English and received his masters degree from the University of Chicago. He also studied French in Paris, France at L'Alliance Francaise and L'Institut Catholique.

He was inducted into the Kappa Delta Pi Honor Society and Who's Who in American College and Universities, 1964-65. He was the recipient of the Woodrow Wilson Fellowship Award in English and was a 1974-75 Jennings Scholar.

Mr. Sherman was employed with Carton Service, Inc. for 15 years where he served as Secretary-treasurer and member of the board of directors. After continuing his education, he taught English for twelve years at Ontario High School.

A veteran of the U.S. Army during WWII, he served for three years with the Army Exchange Service. He was a longtime member of the American Legion O'Brien Post #326.

Jack was a member of the Most Pure Heart of Catholic Church, former board member of the Shelby Community Fund, the Rehabilitation Service of North Central Ohio, the American Red Cross, and was active in expansion campaigns for the Shelby Memorial Hospital.

A caregiver to many, he always enjoyed helping others. He was a voracious reader, with a sharp wit, who loved to write, travel, and work in his yard and flower gardens. In his later years, his passion was bringing Dawn Powell's novels back into circulation.

Survivors include two sisters, Rita A. Sherman and Lillian S. Stover, both of Shelby; four nephews; Jack Nothacker, Jim Nothacker, George Richards, and Paul Stover, and his godson, Patrice Clarin of Toulouse, France.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by one brother, Ross J. Sherman; three sisters, June S. Landis, Adelaide Nothacker and Dorothy E. Richards and one niece, Ann M. Bly.

Funeral services will be held 11:00 AM Saturday, May 12 from the Barkdull Funeral Home. Deacon Stephen Keller and Jack's nephew, Rev. Paul Stover, will officiate with interment in Most Pure Heart of Mary Cemetery. Friends may call at the funeral home Saturday from 10:00 to 11:00 AM. Memorial expressions may be made to the Most Pure Heart of Mary Church and Marvin Memorial Library.
