Beloved School Official to Be Buried in Cemetery in Helena

Anaconda-The body of Miss May McHugh, principal of the Daly public school, who died last night in Lewistown while attending the annual convention of the Sons and Daughters of Montana Pioneers, will arrive in Anaconda Sunday at noon. Funeral services will be held at 10 o'clock Tuesday morning at St. Paul church where solemn requiem mass will be sung. Following the service the cortege will go to Helena for burial in the family plot in Resurrection cemetery.

Death came suddenly to the well-known and highly-respected daughter of a pioneer Montana family. She succumbed after suffering a heart attack at the banquet of the state convention of the Sons and Daughters of Montana Pioneers.

Miss McHugh, a teacher here for many years, went to Lewistown with two sisters, Mrs. Frank (Susan) Close of Anaconda and Mrs. George E. (Celia) Dick of Missoula. She was stricken with a violent coughing spell at the banquet and was taken to her hotel, it is reported. Her sisters were with her when death came.

Miss McHugh was beloved by hundreds of pupils, and her many other friends. Word of her passing was received with sorrow and regret. She was principal of Daly school for 15 years and was at one time county superintendent of schools. Members of the school board and associates described her as a most efficient and conscientious teacher and principal.

She was a daughter of the late Mr. and Mrs. Cornelius McHugh, who came to Montana in the colorful era of the state's early history. Her mother arrived in Virginia City by ox team on Sept. 17, 1864, and lived there with her husband during the vigilante days. Her mother was a charter member of the Montana Pioneer society.

Surviving in addition to the two sisters, are a nephew, Francis Klose, of Anaconda, and two nieces Mrs. Oliver Slette and Mrs. Roy Dofelmier.
