Soviet theater director, People's Artist of the RSFSR (1945), Doctor of Arts (1946), winner of the Stalin Prize (1948). He started in 1907 as an actor in the Vologda Drama Theatre. In 1908-1910 he studied in the director class MAT under B. Nemirovich-Danchenko. From 1910 to 1933 he worked in the Alexandrine theater series: assistant director, director, and in 1928 became the director and artistic director of the theater. Then, in 1910, became engaged in teaching activities. Also in 1918-1920, he worked at Petrozavodsk Drama Theater and participated in the mass production of ideas in Petrograd.
Worked in theaters in "Die Fledermaus", "House of interludes", "Stray Dog", "Halt comedians" as a director and entertainer, used the pseudonym Peter Kohl. In 1920 , together with N. Evreinov, Y.P. Annenkov was the organizer of the theater "Free Comedy". In 1921-1922 he was the chief director of the Bolshoi Drama Theatre. Becoming the former artistic director of the theater Alexandrinsky, Petrov has actively introduced into the repertoire of Soviet drama, they were set play by "Calm" Bill-Belotserkovsky" Armored Train 14-69 "Sun Ivanov". In 1933, Nikolai Petrov headed Kharkov Russian Drama Theatre. From 1939 to 1948, was the chief director of the Moscow theater transport. For the statement in 1947 at the Maly Theatre in conjunction with K. Zubov play on the play "The Great Power" B.S. Romashov was awarded the Stalin Prize in 1948. From 1948 to 1953, was the chief director of the Moscow Theater of Satire, from 1953 to 1956 - another director. From 1956 he was director of the Moscow theater, Pushkin.
