Shirley Armstrong, 60, Madison, and formerly of Darlington, died Jan. 8, 2001 at her home surrounded by family after a courageous battle with cancer.

Shirley was born Oct. 29, 1940, in Dodgeville to Wally and Mary (Coulthard) Armstrong. She was an Administrative Director of Clinical Laboratory at St. Mary's Hospital, Madison.

She was a member of Our Lady Queen of Peace Catholic Church, Madison, where she served on the Adult Enrichment Board, Rosary Makers, Eucharistic Ministry, and was founder of the Prayer Blanket Ministry. She was active in the Dane County Shamrock Club, where she was Irish Person of the Year in 1998 and served as secretary of the planning committee.

Shirley was a leader in local and corporate nationwide organizations: the Wisconsin Association for Medical Technology; the American Society for Medical Technology; the Clinical Laboratory Management Association; the national and state position on Board of Directors of CLMA of Wisconsin, the Advisory Committee for Medical Laboratory Technician Program at Madison Area Technical College. She also served on a committee for Laboratory Medicare Reimbursement Reform in Washington D.C. She was a member of the Southwest Christian Experiences Weekend. Shirley enjoyed playing accordion and banjo with her family in the "Good Ole Family Band" from 1976 to 1989. She played banjo with the "Emerald Isle Ceili Band" from 1971 to 1997 and was one of the organizers for the Rudy Burkhalter Accordion Jamboree for 22 years.

She is survived by five sisters; Marian (John) Ortiz, Cottonwood, Ariz.; Mary Virginia ( Dennis) Gordon, Dodgeville: Charlene (Thomas Jr.) Walton, Darlington, Cathy (Robert) Hinderman, Cuba City; Cindy (Charles) Hillary, Oregon; 15 nieces and nephews; and seven great nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents, Wally on Jan. 25, 1989 and Mary on Feb. 9, 1979.

Mass of Christian burial will be held on Jan. 12, 2001, at Holy Rosary Catholic Church, Darlington, with Fr. Thomas Kelley and Fr. Tom Coyle officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery.

The Steil-Camacho Funeral Home, Darlington, is serving the family.
