Margarito was the son of Anselmo Griego and Manuela Borrego. Identified siblings were: José Alivar, Emilio, Oralia, and Teresita.

On 12 Jul 1943, Margarito was inducted into service with the US Army. On 26 July 1943, Margarito began serving in the US Army. He received his training at Camp Roberts, California. On 14 Jan 1944, He departed for the Pacific and arrived on 4 Feb 1944. He served with Headquarters Company, 1st Battalion, 34th Infantry Division as a field lineman and rifleman. By 2 Sep 1944, he was a Private First Class and serving with the Infantry in New Guinea. He participated in the New Guinea, Southern Philippines Liberation, and Luzon Campaigns. He was awarded the Asiatic Pacific Theatre Medal with Bronze Arrowhead, Philippine Liberation Medal, Army Good Conduct Medal, World War II Victory Medal, Meritorious Unit Award, and the Combat Infantry Badge. On 10 Jan 1946, Margarito was honorably discharged at Fort Bliss, Texas.
