Mrs. Catherine Hartman was born in Schoenthal, Russia, May 28, 1859. She was the daughter of Conrad Appel and his wife Anna Margaretha, nee Schwindt. In her infancy she was received into the communion of the Lutheran Church by baptism and after due instruction confirmed to that church. She came to America on October 25, 1876. In August of 1880 she was united in marriage to Mr. John Hartman at Humboldt. To this union 11 children were born. The family made their home for some time in Lawrence. Then they came to Rush County and made their home on a farm southwest of Otis. In 1921 they moved to Otis. Her husband died on March 17, 1927. Four children have preceded her in death. Mrs. Hartman died Monday, April 5, after a few weeks illness at the home of her daughter, Mrs. Marie Brack, of Otis, where Mrs. Hartman stayed during her declining years. She reached the age of 88 years, 10 months, and eight days. She leaves to mourn her seven children, George of Otis, Mrs. Katie Lesser of Wichita, Henry of La Crosse, Jake of Ransom, Mrs. Sara McKay of Chicago, Mrs. Marie Brack of Otis, and Herman of Kenesha, Wisconsin. She is also survived by 28 grandchildren and seven great grandchildren. Funeral services were held Wednesday afternoon, April 7, at Trinity Lutheran Church of Otis and burial was made in the Lutheran Cemetery with the pastor Rev Kurt G. Schettler officiating.
