Civil War Union Army Officer. He was commissioned as a 1st Lieutenant in Company I, 88th Pennsylvania Volunteer Infantry on September 23, 1861. When Captain James R. White of Company I resigned on June 17, 1862, Jacob S. Stretch was promoted to fill the vacancy. He was wounded on August 30, 1862 at the Second Battle of Bull Run, and resigned due to disability on November 11, 1862.

He died of "consumption" (tuberculosis) in April 1869 at age 33. Buried first in Odd Fellows Cemetery, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, his remains were moved to Laurel Hill Cemetery on October 5, 1882 after his wife, Kate, passed away.

On December 8, 1872 his wife, Kate Stretch, filed for a US Army Widows' Pension (Application #212716), but the application was never completed and she passed away in 1882.
